Art Theatre Campaign
In 1924 a silent movie theater called The Carter Theater opened on 4th street in Long Beach, eighty-five years and three remodels later The Art Theater is a landmark destination for the Long Beach community as well as being the oldest single screen theater in the area. Voted the number one independent theater in LA, it is known for its screening of the most inspired and stimulating independent, documentary, animated, and foreign language films. The theater’s environment and choice of films is intended to identify with moviegoers on a more intimate and emotional level where going to the movies truly makes you feel.
There are themes in films, which we can all relate to, independent movies zero in on emotion in ways that blockbuster films only do in a very shallow way. Our guerilla-handcrafted posters would display names of recognizable independent films that represent these strong emotional responses to great filmmaking. Each has its own set of materials and emotions, which a passer by could literally feel, and figuratively feel, through the use and the manipulation of the specific materials.
All work done by Joe Tornatzky and Teresa English.

A silky red bed sheet and pillows gives an intimate view of a bedroom scene where we feel sex, love, and intense passion with the organic lose cursive type spelling out the movie title.

Rusty nails are violently punched sharp side out through a poster size piece of wood in this piece where it’s all about violence, murder, and revenge.

Beautiful flowers are affixed to a muddy flat to spell out the theme of the famous movie La Vita È Bella (Life is Beautiful) identifying with life and death where as time moves on the flowers die they fall away onto the ground.
